Puppy walking

How much exercise should a 17 week old Yorkie have? Unlike my older dog, she loves walkies but I've read it should be limited to avoid damage to their bones etc? Is it OK to go for a few smaller walks, say 20 minutes a time?

Yes, 20 minutes at a time should be fine for a Yorkie of that age. With a 4 month old I'd do maybe 20 minutes of off lead time, and then maybe a shorter socialization trip at another point in the day (the good thing about Yorkies is that they can be carried ).

When you say "off lead time" do you mean outside? I couldn't do that yet as she'd never come back! We play indoors with balls etc. and she has lots of stairs to climb.
I'm trying to incorporate exercise for me and older dog (we could both lose a few pounds!) with fun and exploring for puppy that's why I thought two or three shorter walks?

We live in a 3 storey townhouse and just because she can, she runs upstairs to top floor quite often..but can't get back down! (12 stairs maybe twice/3 times a day?)

When my Tibbie was that age I took her on short walks ...20 mins or so ... a couple of times a day. If she got tired I carried her until she wriggled and asked to get down.

I always kept her on a 15 m line whenever she was in the garden ... that way she could explore and play without me constantly worrying about her getting onto the road.

Try her on a puppy line and teach her to come back that way. If you don't teach her now, it will be that much harder when she's older...

The guideline for walking puppies is 5 minutes per month.

Don't make the mistake that I did.

The first one I bought was in a sealed package and it was only when I got it home I found the line was no thicker than a piece of string .

It was absolutely useless and a complete waste of money because it kept getting snarled up in long grass ..... and also being black AND thin it was dangerous because neither my other larger dog nor I could see where it was and we both tripped over it a couple of time. I ended up throwing it in the dustbin!
