Showing Dogs. What life does the dog have? FOR or AGAINST

So. I was watching crufts the other day. Do you agree or disagree with crufts????

Personally i disagree.
The ridgeback breed was actually and origionally a non-ridge back but because someone bought a puppy with a ridge and showed him it was then accustomed that any dog in that breed without a ridge had a defect. In every litter of that particular breed in around 5 pups. 2 have the ridge and 3 dont and on this show it said that unfortunately these 'defected pups without the ridge' were being culled if bred for crufts! Its unbelieveble.

Agree or Disagree. I'd love to hear your opinnions. Please reply to this thread. xx

Unfortunately it appears that you do not really understand Crufts and dog showing - Crufts is just a dog show .... no dogs are "bred for Crufts".

My dogs are shown ..... they also walk, run and run in harness up to 15 miles every day, they go to training cloass a coupe of times a week, one comes to work with me every day, they go swimming and mud rolling, they play with toys and destroy them ............

Show dogs are just dogs with hobbies - my dogs are incredibly well socialised and well travelled ...... people who breed for show also need to breed for healthy dogs of excellent temperament ............. I think you are a victim of the recent TV publicity which has shown a very lop sided view of the show world.

Very few breeders cull - but sensationalist TV likes to show extremes ..... I know lots of show breeders and none who would even think about culling ..... and of course showing the thousands of excellent breeders and happy healthy dogs does not make for thrilling TV apparently ...........

Visit a dog show .............. see and judge for yourself ...........

Not entierly sure how true that is?

At the end of the day dog showing is only "disagreeable" when the dog shower puts their own ego before the love of the breed. It really is that simple.

I show my dog, she maybe gets the odd bath during the winter to keep her presentable, apart from that she's no different to any other pet dog. She gets 2 hours of exercise every day, is fed on the best diet available, she sleeps on my bed at night and loves getting as dirty as possible most days of the week.

I don't disagree with Crufts, why would you? Unless you're referring to the Pedigree Dogs Exposed programme? If that's the case then my second paragraph also applies.

HTH.

Oh No no no no no! Dont get me wrong i am for the crufts showing! I regret what i typed now actually. it didnt come across the way i wanted it to evidently. I am a friend of a dog breeder who enters crufts and i agree with this but i do not agree about how they change the rules for the evolution of the dogs is what i meant. Those poor ridgebacks, i think that they should not be so restricting on the breeds maybe have two classes. Ridgeback and Non-Ridge backs you understand what i mean? My friend enters german shepards and i go running with them down the old mud fields where i live its dead fun! I agree that have a good life i was just simply trying to let people voice their opinions and then give them an insite in to what their lives are actually like. Like you say all these people fall into the traps of the extremists on tv that only show the bad and not the good ! : ) what do you show? xx

I have rotties that I show, I would say they have a great life, they are my pets first, but like Muddi says they have a social life with hobbies,

Im a bit confused as to why you think a show dog would have a lesser life than any other dog,
Or do you think they have lesser health than any other dog,

I am sorry i did not want to offend anybody that shows their dogs x

I simply meant that i understand and am for breeding i just think maybe people should loosen up on their dogs like you say pets first.

Many people disagree and i agree but i wanted to give people a better understanding of showing in a good sense. I agree with you. I wanted to let people know that the lives of dogs at crufts are normal and try and straighten out all the rubbish people hear and think they understand x

I show my Siberian Huskies and they love it!

I also work them in harness and they love it! They compete all over the country doing what they were bred for.

They are also my pets and I love ALL five of them!!

Showing is a hobby that I also enjoy doing with them, they know when its show time. I even have one girly that will not touch a puddle whilst her show lead is on, as soon as I change her collar shes straight in them rolling about like a loony!!

Showing is a hobby for those that love their breed, it shows the world how good your dog is and if it improves the breed in the long run this can only be a good thing.

Friends of mine show newfies, and they are the best kept, loved, fed dogs i know. They are adorred by there owners.
All dogs are pets first and they show as a hobby although do very well.

I am not so keen on show kennels that can have 30 dogs in kennels all day, they seem to be more of a business and i don't like that.

If you had ever shown a dog or been to a proper dog show you would not ask the question but to answer it, 99% of dogs love showing, more than going for a walk. If a dog does not like showing or can take it or leave it then there is no point in showing it.
