I have just bought a car harness for Rua which can be used with a lead too which I will used when out and about training recall.

I wouldn't leave it on all day.

I also have one for my little xbreed Skye. It is much more comfortable than a collar. But again not left on all day.

Pereg wears her harness all the time. She has had various makes and styles, the last being the EzyDog Quickfit. But as she lost weight and the harness was too big, instead of going down a size I changed to the ComfortFlex Sports Harness. Same style as the EzyDog one but softer and more comfortable for her.

It also does not rub under her armpits as a smaller size Ezydog one would have done, as it is padded all round her chest.

She also has the matching slip collar [for her tags].

She has one set in red and one set in purple, so that she always has a set on when the other is washed and is drying.

I've never left even a collar on any of my dogs unless I was out with them. I can't see why you'd want to. And I've seen dogs where their fur looks as if they still have a collar on when it's removed because they wear it almost all the time.

So I suppose you could say my dog wears her collar or harness when she had one for a maximum of about 3-4 hours a day.

I just think I'd hate to have a contraption like that on me if I was all curled up getting cosy.

Hi Shane,
I alternate between the two. They both have 'DogGames Perfect Fit' harnesses which are fleece lined so comfortable for the dog. If I'm some where that I can't let them off lead, I'll have them on flexi leads and a flexi lead and a collar is a definite no-no. My boys are naked at home - no collar or harness. The reason being that when anyone comes to the door (but especially me if I've been out) they leap up and down with joy and it would be too easy for one of them to get their collar looped over the door handle Our front door is double clear glass so they do spend a lot of time sitting there waiting for someone to come up the driveway.

I used to think like that until my MIL had a house fire, it was much harder to get control of her dogs for the firemen than if they had been wearing collars. So Mollie has a collar on 24/7, but a harness for walking most of the time. Betty doesn't use a collar at all but can easily be picked up if needed.

Jimmi always has a harness on for walking - not only is it safer, in that he cannot wriggle out of it like he could his collar but it also ensures that he does not choke if he sets off like a rocket after something small and furry.

Another benefit is that his head is totally free to express his intentions to other dogs - a short lead attached to a collar can pull their heads into an unintentionally aggressive position.

I would not leave it on all day though because it would be too uncomfortable I think.

I use a Dog Games fleecy lined harness like Jenny
http://dog-games-shop.co.uk/harnesses-fleece-lined

I think a a good soft harness must me more comfortable for the dog, it takes pressure of the neck distributing the weight across the body instead.

Does this look uncomfortable?

Incidentally she was well overweight then due to her meds. She has now lost all the excess weight, is a lot slimmer, and is wearing a similar harness two sizes smaller now.

I use harnesses for the same reasons as most others, because it spread the pressure. None of mine pull except Malcolm and he walks in a head collar while we work on this.

Scooby wears his harness all day while we are at work because it means I can grab him if needs be but at home only Scooby wears a collar, Malcolm and Bandit go naked
