Tatooing dogs

Hi there

Just wondering what people's thoughts are on tattooing for identification?

I notice that some breeders use chips and others use tattoos but wondered what people preferred.

Could someone clarify whether a tattoo would be accepted as a identification feature for a pet passport or does it have to be a chip.

Thank you.

I personally prefer the chip, not because of how the dog feels but I just feel it marks the dog less.

Tattoo is probably better for identifying them though.

What's your view on piercings

I chose chip because i've never heard of tatooing them, where on the body do they do it?

Scrumps is chipped, TJ is tattoed, he will be chipped when he is older

They are both good identification methods, but a chip can move around, get lost. a tatoo is always there. Unless i know its horrible to say, but remember the greyhound that had its ears cut off to get rid of the tattoo ?

Each way has its ads and disadvantages

Yep tatoos are on the inside of the ear

Could I throw another question out there - what if the breeder you have chosen uses a method for identification that you preferred they didn't use?

Does a potential owner of a pup able to ask for another method or is it not the potential owner's business to ask? Just wondering whether it would also offend the breeder.

I've been reading something about tattoos lately....that old ones have faded/spread out, and are unreadable

Yep that can happen hevvur, both methods have their downfalls. They certainly dont fade easily though!

TJ's breeder had the litter tatooed and i was fine about it, i wouldnt of thought the owner had a say though? its the breeders litter and they decide

That's really sad but why do that it's not like they'd be able to sell the dog on...unless of course they were using the dog for racing

Not good at all.
