Dogs 1st fit, very scary, advice please!

Hi folks,

My little Betty (18 month old Boston Terrier) had a seizure this morning. It was very traumatic to watch bless her. It lasted about 2-3 minutes with her taking around 10 minutes to recover. Going for follow up at the vets this afternoon. She seems absolutely fine now. The vet said we just need to watch her to see if she has anymore. I love this pooch with all of my heart so any info would be gratefully received if any one has any experience of this.

Many thanks in advance
Mel

Hi there, many thanks. She seems back to normal now so I'm feeling a bit calmer. She's mystified as to why I'm following her around like a deranged stalker at the mo! x

There was a very interesting Webinar about canine epilepsy by Dr Laurent Garosi DVM DipECVN MRCVS RCVS who is a European Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Neurology.

The Webinar was live but has been recorded and is now available for viewing. I watched it live but have bookmarked the recording so that I can watch it again if I want.

Link to details about the Webinar

I hope it helps.

What a frightening experience for you and a confusing experience for your little Boston . I hope it was a one off but you will get lots of support here from members with Epi dogs.

Fingers crossed for you.

Dogs can have one of fits but there is always that worry isn't there?

My 16 yr old had one about 2 months ago and has been fine since. She hasn't had another so far so I hope she never does and hope the same for your dog. It is very scary when it happens isn't it?

So sorry to hear this. It's such a shock when it happens to your dog. It could be a one off but it could be the start of more and, yes, you will follow her around watching and waiting.

Make a note of when it happened, how long it lasted, how long she took to get back to normal, any bodily functions that failed, any 'paddling' with her legs, what she had to eat during the day, any exercise she had, what the weather was like - plus anything else you can think of...........

Your vet is unlikely to do anything at this stage other than check her over - my dog had four seizures before being medicated but, because they were becoming closer together (eight weeks, two weeks, 12 days) it was felt that he should then start on the medication.

I am very lucky that he had no more seizures after that (three years ago) and I am now gradually reducing his medication. Good luck and I hope your dog is okay - please feel free to pm me if you would like any more information.

I can only imagine how scary it was for you. And can fully understand you stalking her!

I too hope it turns out to be a one off but, if not, hopefully can be successfully managed.

Good luck.

Hi peeps, thank you all so much for your kindness and words of encouragement. The vet has started her on a months trial of low dose meds as her symptoms were classically epileptic (timing of fit, when it occurred, symptoms, recovery, Betty's age). She's back to her old self now thank goodness and as people have said I think it was probably far worse for me than her in the end! It is so horrible to watch, you feel so helpless, fingers crossed its a one-off, bless her. The vet asked me to film any other fits on my mobile if possible so I'll have to get familiar with that(!)

Thank you all again for your support, it really is very much appreciated xxx
