Fence...How high should it be?

Hi

I have a 1.5 year old lab. I want to be able to put him freely in the garden. How high of a fence should I putting up?

Can I restrict him with very tight shrub like fence plants?

You know your own dog, I had two GSDs one a 9 inch fence stopped the other scaled a 9 foot fence when chasing a squirrel. I'd have thought a 6 foot fence would be fine but as you can see its not a definite restriction & I'd hate to be blamed if your dog climbed any fence I suggested.

It will really depend on how keen your dog is on getting out.

None of mine have a desire to roam and I am sure a 2ft fence would be enough in my case (though mine is 6ft). However, I've known dogs who are determined to escape and they have cleared 6ft fences, wriggled through hedges, even dug their way out under fences!

I think most people would say that a 6ft fence would be appropriate in most circumstances.

ETA - GSD Sue - you obviously type faster than me

We have a four foot fence with a one foot trellis on top of that. None of the labs have been jumps and thats always been ok, but you know your dog best so 5ft/6ft would be most likely.

We do have hedges as well and they always found ways through them, even where they were tightly bunched.

As peeps have said here it depends on your dog. I have a
BC and have a 3ft fence with a 1ft trellis on top and he has never shown interest in getting over it. . . yet!

I have an eight foot fence. My labs dug under it.......

Not your shiba's vicki? Kai went through a phase of digging under a 6ft panel, had to dig chicken wire under the fencing. Make you laugh don't they.

On one occassion he was found in next doors garden on there 10ft trampoline....probabley just entertaining himself, although the neighbours were not that impressed

6ft should be fine for most dogs, i wouldn't recommend hedging as mine always seem to get through it.

One was found at East Croydon Station. I think he was after an awayday at the seaside
