Not an A, you will be too heavy (sorry ), but a Welsh section C would probably be ok

Exmoor's are pretty tough too, as are Icelandics.

Welsh Sec C?
I'm 5ft1 and weighed about 9 stone when I rode - I was edging on the side of too big (and I have short legs) for my Welsh B.

Oh Dear. May Push a sec A abit too Far, Would have Def been ok before though.Prob be ok if you were more 9ish once in a while. Have a look at section Cs, but not so Available as Sec As.

personally id not put a 7yrold on a cob type , inc, Highlands/fells/dales, although they are Gorgeous.

Maybe a Connermara or Connermarax Sec A would be Nice, have a look at Dartmoors. I love Exmoors but they would be ok for you but not for a 7yrold.

Thanks again everyone. I MUST get down to 9 stone again! LOL!

Anyway, there is a lady who lives a couple of miles from us who has a beautiful Highland (as well as a lovely GSD ) so I am going to go and have a chat with her about Highlands and will keep researching the others on the net in the meantime.

Thanks for the link Mish

I agree an A would be the least one to go for, they are the smallest and lightest (and also the most fiery) of all the native ponies.

A B/C would be ok, or any of the others mentioned, although some can be as high a 14 hhs plus.

I would also go for an older pony one who knows his job.

if your going to be riding the pony as well I would go for a bit bigger than the section A, poss section B / C or section B x somit,

great wee ponys.

A 7 yo may find some of the natives a bit wide for comfort - IMO a New Forest or NF cross may be more comfortable and still able to carry either of you. Of course you buy an individual, not a breed, and there are always exceptions but generally a Highland, Dales or Fell may be a bit chunky for a littley.

More tricky is the saddle as you'll need it to fit the pony, your youngster and you I'm betting your upper leg is longer than theirs - make sure you end up with something you find comfy too!

What about an Icelandic?

The place we do agility keeps them too for riding for the handicapped - I take it from that their temperaments can't be too bad. The only drawback is that they can suffer really badly from sweet itch brought on by midge bites. (Tom has some up at his as well).
