Your dogs have had so much upset that if I was you I wouldn't take in any more dogs, even as fosters.
Totaly agree with you both
Fostering really isnt possible with Mia (and my neighbours) at the moment
But taking her on was such a steep learning curve
I went softly softly, prob much more so than most people would - but if I was doing it again I would go even more so
For the first day she spent most of it in the crate in the sitting room. I had an airlock system meaning the dogs were never together
then I slowly introduced them keeping Mia on a house line
I did it a little too quickly and there were some fights

Then when my friends dog came to stay for a month I did exactly the same thing, seperate except for supervised play, seperated before they got too excited, training together so they got used to good things happening when they were together
and it worked, when my friend dropped them off there was 1 scuffle - with my slowly slowly method I had no fights in the whole month

I know it sounds like overkill but when taking a new dog into the house that is what I will always do from now on, you just dont know how it will upset the household - and it gives them a chance to take everything in slowly and have a safe place to relax (Mia adores her crate)

Yiannis was attacked in September by a human. Zane was attacked by Murphy and last summer by Ellie.
It was suggested that when Ellie had a go at Yiannis before Christmas that it could be that she's behaving every 6 months as though she was still to come into season - and at those times she would have been had she not been speyed in April last year. I had some tests done which showed that although she'd have both her uterus and ovaries removed, she has little foaty bits of tissue inside that most likely were either missed at the time (although maybe they were too small to see) or grew afterwards. Because of these, she's reacting that way. Now I know about it, it just means that twice a year Ellie gets to go on her holidays (to my Mom's) for 7-10 days or so. After the bad mood swings have gone, she can come home again.

Teaching him to read and box at the same time? No mean feat if his send-aways are anything to go by!

Murphy was the first dog to have caused a problem with my dogs. Aside from the scum who hurt Yiannis, the other problems have involved Ellie. Usually it's the boys sqabbling and being silly that makes her get involved but I can see it coming now so now how far to let them go. Other than when Ellie bit Zane's face in the summer, she doesn't really start the arguments as such (although she can be very quick if I'm not on the ball) but she will finish it. Typical Akita!

I haven't had any more fosters. My dogs are happy to socialise with other dogs both in and out of the home but I decided to sort my lot out first and give them some "breathing space" before even considering any more coming into the home. I've had (altogether) 9 fosters in a very small space of time which makes the whole thing seem much worse. Fortunately most of them were with me for only a very short time, other than Morris who was with me for about 6 weeks before Christmas. As we were at my Mom's over Christmas Moris had to go elsewhere adn is now with another fosterer. I will take on more fosters, but not anytime soon. As I said, my lot need sorting out first.

Well that is good news. I got the impression from when you were trying to rehome Buddy that the spats had been going on for far more than 7-10 days.

Does that mean that Buddy isn't at your Mum's anymore and that you are not still tying to rehome him?

I'd be interested to learn about what tests they did to identify the 'floaty bits of tissue' left behind - didn't know they could do that.

Laura, if your vet has confirmed that she has some remaining tissue, what has he said to do about it? Did he not inform you that if this is the case, Ellie could be at risk from stump pyometra and/or mammary/ovarian cancer? Was it your vet who has suggested that it may have 'grown afterwards'?

I would certainly be looking at a change of vet and would be talking to them about having a further op to remove the remaining tissue.

(Tillymint sorry to continue OT but I thought it important to bring this to Stumpywop's attention)
