why is my dog drinking loads with a swollen belly?

hi all
any help would be appriciated,
my dog foxy has been drinking lots and urinating a lot over the last few days, we took her to the vets who has prescribed antibiotics after a blood test, she has had 3 days worth but is no better, if anything she is worse - off her food, lethargic, not wanting to move and her abdoman seems swollen, any ideas?

what age is your dog? I would say dont panic, if the dog is weeing all over the place it could be a urine infection,

I had a rottie who developed diabetes at 6.5 years old,

the amount of water he began to drink was massive though, in the region of 15 pints over night if I remember rightly,,, I will try to find the link to the thread on here x

that said it could be something compleatly diff.

DID your vet do a urine check on your dog?

My heart always skips a beat (bloat) whenever I see those words 'swollen belly' in a thread title.

Glad to read she's been seen by your vet though & fingers crossed you get to the bottem of the problem.

Hi Louise, is your bitch spayed? If not my first concern would be Pyometra...
I would not hesitate in going back to the vet ASAP if as you say there has been no improvement after 3 days.

she is about 8 now, the vet did a urine test, said nothin in it that shouldnt be it was just very weak,
pyometra was one of my thoughts too but she has been spayed,
thinking it could be her antibiotics, as she went worse after taking them last night

Has she been tested for cushings? Two of the symptoms include increased drinking and a swollen stomach. I don't think they go off their food though 8 is probably about the time you would see the onset of cushings too. Presumably the vet has checked out her kidneys? Anything that involves increased intake of fluid could mean that there is a problem going on in the kidneys.

Good luck, I hope she gets sorted soon.
