I'm none too pleased with the NTL service tbh..nothing but problems!!
Yeah, we were pig sick of them and went back to BT after their 'customer service' department completely messed up our account. Limited LAN connection definitely sounds like their end to me. Ring em in the morning and give em hell. Nothing on their website about outages either but that's no great surprise really

Your PC connects directly to NTL via the cable modem box.
Your laptop connects to NTL? via the Linksys router, which also goes to the cable modem ?

Turn off the PC, then reset the cable modem. Turn on PC.

If the laptop is working through NTL, then the NTL connection through the cable modem must be working.

Have you tried connecting the PC to the router using ethernet cable instead of using the USB cable ?

Right...the laptop is connected by the card thing to the linskys box...which by ethernet is connected to the modem..which is connected to the pc by the same way.
NTL's advice was to Unplug the mod & therouter from each other and the computer..switch off..leave for ten minutes. Did that and NOTHING! And thats the same advice we received when ringing back

So what did they say when you told them you'd already done it once? They can't just leave it like that without giving you further advice.

So, you're saying that the PC is connected to the router by ethernet cable and not directly to the cable modem ???

If that's the case, the problem is local to your PC or the router.
  1. Go to the Control Panel
  2. Click Network and Internet Connections.
  3. Right click on the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties.
  4. If you don't have the Local Area Connection icon it is probably because your network card is not installed and configured correctly
  5. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  6. Click on the Properties button.
  7. Check that Obtain an IP address automatically, and Obtain DNS server address automatically are both selected.
  8. Click on the Advanced button and select the DNS tab in the Advanced TCP/IP Settings window.
  9. Ensure that Register this connection's addresses in DNS is not selected.
  10. Click OK, OK, then Close to close all boxes.
Note: This assumes that your router is set up as a DHCP server
