Spiders and Conkers

I'm sure it was on here that I read that conkers stop spiders coming in the house, so at the moment I have got conkers all over the place

Now my question is, are conkers poisonous to dogs?

Yeah, you can guess who has gathered up all the conkers and taken them to her bed!

I think they would be if eaten. Horse chestnuts are certainly poisonous to humans unlike roasting chestnuts.
Why do they keep spiders away?

Surely not the lovely Mo?!?

My nephew and sister made me a spider out of fir cones and conkers! It's pretty good, i'll have to take a picture and post it up at some point! Not sure if it has any effect on the spiders or not though.

Also i found this list of things on the Dogs Trust site, haven't had a good look through but might help with your conker research!

Anything is worth a try

Thanks Esme. Horse chestnuts, leaves and nuts are poisonous to dogs if eaten in large amounts.
The "lovely Mo" hasn't actually eaten any, just keeps gathering them up.

I think I read somewhere that they are toxic in large quantities - which is a shame because Loki seems to love them!

My mum swears that conkers stop spiders but apparently they have to be fresh ones. The RSC are investigating whether there is a chemical which puts the spiders off and are offering a reward for proof ...:

Maybe she's collecting them up to give to you as a gift!! Or she's planning on entering the annual conker competition!

Well Obviously Mo doesn't want anymore spiders in her bed .
Seriously though I have never heard of conkers keeping spiders away, but if eaten I would think are poisnous to dogs so be careful.
Now off to decorate my house in conkers as spiders terrify me.

Thats interesting but if they keep spiders away how can I get evidence?
I will let you all know how I get on, there are conkers everywhere and the fascination has worn off now for Mo. After a few stern aaagghhhs she is leaving them alone!

I was at a friends the other night when a HUGE hairy spider came tinkle tinkleing out from behind a fridge. You guessed it she had conkers on the floor in the kitchen, works well then!

(I don't know how fresh they were admittedly! )
