I'm going to guess it was staged. And that this dog was trained to "smile" on command (my dog smiles like that when you rub her belly), either the words he was using or some hand signal we can't see.

Hmmmmmmm...meaning of subtle is..."So delicate or precise as to be difficult to analyze or describe."...I think I am pretty precise, not difficult to analyze or describe.. but, I think you are too delicate.

Getting back to a lighter note.....our Oldie does that ''grinning'' when you say ''who dunnit'' and also when we are out walking after she has rolled in something nasty she has done this from the day I rescued her

Yep one of mine does it often, her dad did it so she copied him.

I totally get why people see the video and think it's funny, because on the face of it, it does appear pretty funny - dog grinning weirdly and all that!

However, I do feel uncomfortable when I see it (seen it a lot now, it seems to be doing the rounds ) because if you look at the dog, he/she is clearly showing a lot of appeasing signals to the owner - eyes tight, tension around the face, head turning etc. So what the dog is really doing does look funny, but sadly it is clear that he/she is actually showing signs of being pretty unhappy and trying to appease the owner/make the owner stop.

I'd not treat my own dog in that way as it's kind of bullying really.
