Reducing tartar

Any hints on reducing tartar build up?
Hide chews don't do anything, so I'm now trying roast bone to see if that'll do the trick - At 4 years old I think she's past trying to attack with a tooth brush!

You can get dog toothpaste that you don't have to brush in.

I don't think four years old is too old to introduce a tooth brush if you want to and you do it positively. I didn't get my last dog until he was ten years old and he'd never seen a tooth brush........until i smelt his breath!

Well I'm attacking my 4 year old, 2 year old , 7 year old and 9 year old with a toothbrush and believe it or not it's the 2 year old that won't tolerate it!!
I posted a similar thread a few days ago and someone suggested "Plaque Off" so I've got some. Apparently it softens the tartar so it comes off the teeth easier. Pedigree dental chews are supposed to reduce tartar by 80%. I'm just trying them now. It can take a few weeks but it's worth a try.
Also there is a toothpaste I got from the vets called "Logic". It's an oral hygiene gel and you can use it with a toothbrush or just wipe it over the teeth and gums with your finger. It's supposed to be very good.

Raw chicken wings! Mine get one every morning and they have beautiful white teeth - even the 14-year old. When I got him (age 5) his teeth were awful but they`re fine now.

Raw meaty bones, chicken wings, raw carrot are the best things to get rid of plaque. Roast bones can be very dangerous as they splinter. My dogs (raw fed) are nearly 3 now and have lovely white teeth.

If it's significant tartar build up then the vet might need to scrape it off. But I agree with the others - raw chicken wings are very good. You can feed them frozen too and that makes it a bit harder for the dog to chew.
