It does not quite work like that, there are degrees of HD and even those with a poor score may not show signs of difficulties. The main problem is when dogs with poor scores are bred and then pups can be born that are unable to stand properly.

Any dog that has a score that is not 0/0 has HD so you will see that most if not all of us will have dogs that have HD.

I have a dog with severe HD.
Diagnosed at 2 and after becoming intolerant to his painkillers was given a total hip replacement of the left hip at 3yrs old.
The op was a total success, he is now getting on for 7yrs old and is painfree.
He still has an awful right hip joint, in fact much worse on the x-rays than the left that was replaced, but it doesn't cause him any pain.
