I din't use them when my bitch whelped. She was great she instinctively moved them away from where she was wanted to lie and so they were okay and if she did accidently sit on them they cried and she moved out of the way. They would crawl back to her for a cuddle but at least they were safe. However, I would check on her quite a few times to make sure everything was okay.

I don't like pig rails either, never used them. Same as saying don't let your baby sleep in your bed because you will go to sleep and lay on it
I never had any squashed puppies or babies and have had lots of one and a few of the other

I thought new mums had been warned about NOT letting their babies sleep in bed with them??

.. o yes but that advice is assuming the mother is going to go to sleep as well as the baby. Cuddling your baby in bed is a wonderful experience and one both parents can share

You lost a puppy ? That is very sad CC, did you check it out was it fit? I used to have cockers too, Orange Road and BlueRoan. I only ever remember a bitch overlaying one pup and it was later found to have a cleft pallet..poor little baby..the vet said the dam often seems to knows when a puppy has a probem and this one (not a cocker) would have had to be PTS
