Eunice, I hope my previous post didn't make it sound like I thought that everybody who didn't choose to rescue was a snob...I don't think that at all, as I hope you know.

Everyone on Dogsey is so supportive of those of us with rescue dogs that I would hate to be misunderstood (and especially you, with your very kind support with the recent loss of Kip).

some people arent good enough to rescue dogs, ie you work full time, live in a flat, have unetured dogs, have dogs, have no dogs, have no garden have too small a garden, have too big a garden, you arent married, you have kids, you have cats, you have small furries, you have used a crate in the past, you dont use a crate, you dont vaccinate, etc etc etc

Is there any some wonder people DONT rescue?

I agree with this, the list goes on,rescues do make it really difficult for some people.

labradoodle from a breeder its a pup, costs more money - say 1300?? (not uncommon!)

which would you get???

personally id get the pup - costs most money but i cant socialise the dogs - train it etc

this is why rescue centres, although sometimes cheaper (i admit shouldnt have put that before !)) - pups are far more appealing - even to people who are older and know there are dogs that need rescuing..
I find that attitude really sad. You would rather encourage byb's breeding cross breeds than take on a dog that you know the history of and has no issues.

Why could you not train it and socialise the 2 year old?

Pups may be more appealing to you but certainly not to everyone and not everyone has a lifestyle to suit having a pup either - I work so wouldnt have the time to train and socialise a pup and what happens when it loses that puppy appeal - many end up in rescue centres!

What has age got to do with people wanting a rescue or a pup?

I work full time, I have dogs but at one point did not, my garden isnt big, Im not married, I have cats yes the list goes on but for every rescue that has guidelines that rule you out, one or more will not or look at each individual on their own merit. Yes you might have to look a little harder but surely reputable breeders have some sort of guide as to who they would home their pups with.

FYI,
(1) not all rescue dogs are unsocialised/untrained
(2) It is very possible to train rescue dogs to a high level (just ask Patch :smt002 ).

Look at it this way, you've had Millie for about the same time I've had Hoki, I think.

One of us has a dog who has fantastic recall and who would rather be with their owner than anywhere else.

Anyone like to guess whether this is the dog had from a pup or the one got from rescue at age about 6 years?

its a discussion, not an opportunity to get personal...

they were my views, there to be agreeed, disagreed or just ignored - whatever!

my view is id rather get a puppy, because then i have the paper/pedigree and kc reg - thats my personal opinion - before we got sam we were looking at a rescue dog - whicha t the time i was younger and they wouldnt rehome with kids -

each to their own - great for people who rescue - if it suits your circumstances good for you

We need to know what we are getting.

When we buy our dog we will know its full history - health and temprement wise and will have a knowledgeable breeder to fall back on, should any problems arise.
I have to echo this post entirely.

I'm sorry some of you have had bad experiences with rescue.
Where I got Missy from you could be matched with a dog that would suit your lifestyle - and there were dogs that could go to people in flats, people with children, etc.
I did ask when we were interviewed if they turned people away, and they did say yes - but usually it was because people had their hearts set on a breed which was not suitable for the life they lived. In those cases, the needs of the dog came first.

But in the example you used you wouldnt get papers or kc reg! Many rescues will rehome with kids - you just have to look harder which you would for a good breeder anyway
