Hip scoring

Can some-one tell me how the hip scoring works & how it is done?

Having Sasi to the vets this morning for a check-up & her 1st booster, everything was absolutely fine thank goodness.
The vet knows only too well about my last NI having hips dysplasia & osteo arthritis and the pain she went through before it was diagnosed.

He suggested having Sasi hip scored at around 12-18 months. I have absolutely no plans to breed her & will have her spayed when the time is right.

Would it be something you would consider having done?

Unfortunately we don't know the parents hipscore, or even if they have been done. Sasi's parents were taken on at the age of 5 for the bitch & 3 for the dog, from different people, by the family we got Sasi from.

We know the Mum of Sasi's dad hipscore was 8:5 (13)

I will get her spayed, after her 1st season, sounds a good idea to get the hs done then too.

The parents should have been checked pre breeding no matter what age the breeder took them on.

Oh dear

I would not necessarily score your girl ... Maybe have xray done while under for spaying ... Just to be sure all is ok

I don't think I would to be honest, unless you were planning on doing any kind of sport with her.

As she is going to be a larger dog, I would be careful on the exercise regime as she is growing and maybe look at a Glucosamine supplement a bit later. (JMO)

In all honesty I felt that we would be the best ones to take her knowing what we know about hd. If it turns out she develops hd then we'll do everything we can to make her comfortable the same as we did with my girly. No insurance to cover it either she was 4yo when i got her, after 2 weeks I noticed she wasnt walking properly on any of her legs.Atrip to the vet showed her with no left knee joint, arthritis, hd & osteoarthritis...previous owner obviously knew not a thing bout it. if it happens again, we'll be there for her.

See how she grows first before getting her spayed at 6 months, I had no intention of breeding from either of my girls but i didn't get them spayed till they were 18 months old, they both had 3 seasons and the vets reckoned they were fully or close enough proportioned so thats why i had them done then (if u'd have seen Shila u'd have understood ) x
