Nervous Samoyed owner

Dear all,

I'm delighted to find your forum!! My partner and I just got an 8 wk old female samoyed. The first couple of days have been interesting as we have gotten to know each other. My partner has never had dogs and I grew up on a farm so I'm used to dogs but only as outside creatures.

Any, this is my new family, my very patient boyfriend, Waffles our at-the-moment-happily-sleeping samoyed and me, sleep deprived and in bits.

Welcome to Dogsey!

Oh yes, I remember being completely frazzled for about 4 weeks when we brought Max home!

We slept downstairs as he whined so much in his crate. I remember falling asleep on the kitchen floor, wrapped in a blanket with my hand inside the crate so he could touch me....

Firstly, I wouldn't restrict a puppies water, it's important that it's always freely available. If you're worried about Waffles spilling it, you can get a coop-cup type of bowl which hangs on the crate, rather than being on the floor.

I've always woken the puppy up to toilet in the night (on my timescales, not theirs). That has meant setting an alarm and taking puppy out of the crate and outside and ensuring they poo/wee (lots of praise and a small treat).

There are all sorts of tricks to settle a new puppy - hot water bottles, ticking clocks, an item of your worn clothing in her crate, a blanket which still smells of the litter etc. It might be worth bearing these in mind!

...why sleep deprived? (other than a wake up during the night for wee wee)

OMG - I woke up every time Max moved/whined/made a teeny noise...

Actually, he whined for hours every night, and as neurotic first time owners, we panicked about everything!
