Sid (Black Labrador)
Sid is a beautiful black Labrador boy of about 8 years of age who is in an Oldies Club foster home near Chippenham in North Wiltshire.
Poor Sid spent six weeks in a very poor state in a pound before being rescued by a wonderful lady who sought veterinary care for him and asked if we could take him into our care. We therefore know nothing about Sid’s background. However, someone, at some time, has obviously loved and cared for Sid.
Every day, his foster carers discover a new trick he knows. He’ll do the obvious – sit, lie, over, paw and other paw - but he will also put his front legs on you when given the ‘up’ command, and he’ll carry his own lead. This charming boy learns new things very quickly.
Sid is not a large Lab – he currently weighs 30 kilos. He’s not as boisterous as the majority of Labs, more the quiet studious type! Sid settled into his foster home in no time at all and he’s happy to be left alone for a few hours.
Sid is very good with other dogs but he does not like dogs larger than he is who hassle him. He could live with other dogs (he absolutely adores other Labs) but would also enjoy being an only dog with someone who is around a fair time. He loves human attention. He seems fine with cats - he simply looked a the cat who lives in the veterinary surgery and did not react at all when it was walking around. He would not want to be pulled around by youngsters or surrounded by loud children, but he would be fine with slightly older, calm children.
Sid is brilliant on the lead (you don’t know he’s with you). Offlead he’s fine, always keeps you in view, but he isn’t into instant recall (he is getting better). He’s excellent in the car.
Sid’s foster carers tell us:
“His hobbies are eating, eating, eating, walks, and being fussed over by humans. His perfect home would be as the only dog in a home with a fit older person/couple who are around a lot of the time and who will take him out and about. He is a very sociable soul and his behaviour is immaculate; he can be taken anywhere“.
Sid is vaccinated, flea-treated and wormed. He will be neutered on 13th January; we have had to take things slowly as he was seriously ill with pneumonia only a short time before coming to us. He will also have a dental and have a blocked tear duct flushed. He was lame when he arrived at his foster home (he had a sprained toe) but has had no problems after the first week. He has a heart murmur (grade 2-3) but it does not affect the heart and the beat is strong and regular. He had a rash between his toes on arrival, possibly caused by salted pavements. He does not seem to be so happy walking on the road (perhaps he has not walked on them for some time and has soft pads).
Sid is loving, quiet, sensible and charming. You can’t ask for more than that!
