I have a question :)

Hiya,

My friend has just asked me to keep an eye out for an american bulldog (Johnsons) for him but I have looked on epupz and through champ dogs to see breeders but they are not showing up as a breed, the only place I can find them advertised is freeads which makes me a little wary to start off with.

My question is are these dogs actual breeds or are they the new "in" dogs crossed ?
Thanks
Sarah

They are not recognised as a breed by the Kennel Club. There are a few breeders out there, I just googled 'American Bulldog' and got a few breeders sites up plus a couple of breed clubs.

Thanks Debs,

Dues to them not being recognised by the kennel club, should that be telling me not to go ahead and look for one for him, is my friend due a good talking to about dogs.

I am usually up on dogs but this was a breed I had heard of but never seen one so I cant really say much to him about one

Just because a breed isn't recognised doesn't mean it's all bad but you would need to do a huge amount of research into the breeders (as you would any breeder) and see for what purpose they have their dogs, what they do with them, do they belong to a club.
I believe that some breeders here in the UK register them with the ABA in America but I have no idea whether that's a mark of quality or not lol!

This site http://www.bluebloods.pwp.blueyonder...uying_info.htm have a section on buying a puppy and they do go into health testing and suitable onwership so maybe they'd be one of the better places to contact?

Firstly has he owned dogs like these before? I own two American Bulldogs

I could put you in touch with a couple of reputable breeders, wouldn't know if they have pups, but maybe best getting your friend to have a good chinwag with them, but, please don't buy out the free ads, or any breeder that comes up first in the search engines, don't..
It's so hit and miss with these dogs, believe me.

Although very lovely dogs, they are not a first time Bull Breed dog. Infact I would go as far as saying some don't make 'great' pet dogs, they are primarily a working breed and one that can be highly strung. I really wouldn't recommend them for anyone who has never owned a dog of this type before.

They won't be now or anytime in the near future be recognised by our own Kennel Club, that much I can guarantee you.

Thanks Becky,

I have only seen a few of them on freeads so that has turned me off to start with, I did notice however that some were registered with the aba and another club but cant remember that name will do some looking and find that one out

Thanks.

They have owned dogs in the past but not of the bulldog kind, I would prefer it if I am quite honest if they didn't get one but thats for my own reasons. Not that they don't look after them they are played with and looked after perfectly but it always ends up me walking them with my own (probably my fault for offering in the first place). I have 2 rottweilers and could handle their staff whilst I walked but not to sure on one of these.

If they've never owned a dog of this kind, then I definately wouldn't recomend the American Bulldog, theres so many in rescue now because people have bitten off more than they can chew.
There are so many different strains and types which is partly why they will never be recognised by the K.C.
Also they generally tend not to be so tolerant with other dogs, it's hit and miss with them don't matter how well they are socialised some just don't like other dogs, so maybe another good reason not to get one.
