Please could anyone give me some advice on when i am able to take my little girl into the garden to start house training, as she will be 8 weeks old on monday, therfore has not had her first jab. Am i able to take her in the garden after this jab, or will i have to wait til her next jab at 10 weeks

You can take he into the garden straightaway, house training should start the minute she gets home and she can be around dogs who are fully vacc'd/healthy, just not to places where other (unknown) dogs may have been, that's all. x

Hi there.

You can take her into the garden straight away if it is your garden and not accessed by other un-vaccinated dogs.

You need to wait until she has all her jabs before taking her into the big wild world, the vet will let you know when all ok. although she would benefit from being taken out and about in your arms to help with her socialisation (if she is not too heavy).

You need to avoid letting her anywhere a sick dog eliminated in the last 6 months. If your garden is fenced, likely it is safe. We have had a new puppy every year since 1991, and never a problem.

The period between 6-12 weeks is a dangerous time. One sniff where a sick dog relieved itself in the last 6 months can bring on parvo or another life threatening disease. Fail to expose it to strangers, including men, women, children, noise, etc. and you could end up with a misfit you can't take out in public. They also need continuing contact with other dogs, but it must be limited to ones you know are getting good care.

Yes and as Luchi said, taking her out in your arms to everywhere you can is vital for her socialisation.

Best of luck. x

Hi Holly I agree with Luchi and Random, I always take new puppies out into the garden the moment I get them home.
As long as your garden isn't used by unvaccinated dogs it should be fine. There is a very slight risk of puppies picking up things from foxes if they happen to come into your garden but the risk is so slight it is hardly worth mentioning and I have never let this deter me taking them out.

As already suggested if you can carry your puppy to see things, that all helps with the socialisation and taking it for short rides to get used to a car is a good idea too. I took my last puppy into the hairdressers and the noisy builders yard. Now an adult she hasn't any fear of anything
