Was wondering

What is the one thing you would say to a new owner of a puppy that you may think would be of help, think I would say “never allow the dog to do something as a puppy that you would not find acceptable in the adult dog”.

And what would you say to help with the stress level I would say “don’t worry too much about house training 99% of dogs will learn in the end whether you train of not”.

Pretty much the same as the first bit of yours....start as you mean to go on! Once a habit is learned its very hard to break!
I think one of the most important things is to teach the pup from day one that you cannot be with it 24 hrs a day .This prevents the onset of seperation anxiety and as we know this leads to so many dogs being given up for rehoming

Agree with the first point 100%

Re stress - always try to set your puppy up to succeed in anything and everything.

Well must say folks although it is nice to be agreed with but I had hoped for a lot of good and different ideas. On the training we have

“never allow the dog to do something as a puppy that you would not find acceptable in the adult dog”. (Me)

“start as you mean to go on! Once a habit is learned its very hard to break!”(Archer)

“add the three T´s: Things Takes Time - always good to remember IMO (AMTS)

Then there is the anti stress part

“don’t worry too much about house training 99% of dogs will learn in the end whether you train of not” (Me)

“teach the pup from day one that you cannot be with it 24 hrs a day” (Archer)

“Re stress - always try to set your puppy up to succeed in anything and everything.” (Shadowboxer) think I understand can you enlarge on this so others can too.

“Don`t expect too much of pup, try understanding from pups way of thinking & treat kindly but firmly ” (Christine)

“"Don't buy cream anything!!!" ” (Ozzysmom) in my case it is don’t buy black and everything needs pockets including your nightwear

"A trained dog is a happy dog!" (Ozzymom)

Now that is a good start but I'm hoping to produce a quote a day calendar and so far it is half past January- so get typing with your ideas. :smt024

Training...
1/repetition is the key to success
2/always use a calm voice for an exitable or worried puppy/dog
3/keep training sessions fun and short
4/tone of voice means as much as the words you say
5/a puppy doesn't know right from wrong until you teach it the difference
6/punishment once the deed is done is pointless....a dog doesn't understand 'look what you did 10 minutes ago!'

Stress
1/ a puppy doesn't do things to wind you up...it does it because it knows no better
2/prevention is better than cure
3/Don't make a fuss of your dog when you leave the house ...play it down...its no big deal!
4/keep to a routine so that puppy knows what to expect and when
5/count to 10....take a deep breath and repeat...'He's only a baby!!'

Training should be regular, but short sessions so it dont get bored.
Be consistent.
Be patient.
Keep a routine.
Dont feed it before yourselves.
Greet other members of family before it when entering house.
Dont shout when it wont comply with a request.
Physical repremanding will make it nervous with you.
Socialise it with people of all ages.
Socialise it with other dogs and dont be too concerned if an adult dog tells it off for being too boisterous-its only nature and they have to learn their place.
Dont comfort if it shows fear of new things-offering comfort will only instill the fear.

Yes you are right about the house-training Thordell ours was about 8 months before it finally dawned on him that we would prefer him to use the garden and he still does it in the kitchen every morning when I leave him for 20 minutes but that is more stress and anxiety related than not being house trained because he is very clean whilst we are in and always goes to the back door to go out
