Butch - 5 year old Patterdale Terrier x in Oxford

Butch is a 5 year old Patterdale Terrier cross and is currently on foster in Oxford.

The Butch Fact File

Dog status: Good, can be little nervous with much larger dogs
Cat status: Cannot be rehomed with cats, small animals, or chickens
Child status: Likes the quiet life, best rehomed to adult only home or possibly with teens or older children.
House training: Good
Home alone: Not 100% comfortable in his own company and this will need some work in new home. Not suitable for full time workers.
Basic training: Very food orientated so training should be easy, has learnt sit and has nice house manners. Will need work on his recall.

Butch came into Hope’s care because his owner had to move into a hostel & wasn't able to take Butch with him. He was bought as a puppy as a working terrier and has been docked; we have a certificate to prove this was done correctly. Butch was described when surrendered to Hope Rescue as a “failed worker” however he is very keen to follow a scent & will chase cats so he won't be looking for a home with cats, chickens or small furries.

Butch is in foster with a gaggle of terriers and after an initial shyness settled in just fine and became a firm favourite as a willing playmate. He has shown some nervousness when meeting collie types but this is thought to be due to lack of socialisation with larger dogs in general.

Butch isn’t as tough as his name suggests and is in fact quite nervous at first but once given time to settle is very loving. He would like an adult only home or with older sensible teenagers as he can be frightened of loud noises and the hustle and bustle of a busy household. He likes to be with his humans and couldn’t be rehomed with a full time worker as he gets anxious when left. This will need worked on when he moves home with the period of time he is left being built up gradually.

Butch is housetrained, has not shown signs of being destructive in the house at all and travels great in the car. He loves to come to the stables & does a funny little dance on his hind legs when you pick up his harness. He has learnt quickly to sit for food and to be polite with people and dogs in the house. He would benefit from further training with positive reinforcement; however he is not a dog that would be suitable to be off lead right now as his recall disappears when he smells or sees something more interesting! While he walks well on a lead you do need a firm grip in case he gets a scent or you will see him disappearing into the undergrowth.

In summary Butch is looking for a kind quiet family that will allow him to build up his trust in them in his own time. He is an active lad so would like a reasonably active home that is aware that while its claimed that Butch is “failed worker” they are aware he is very keen to scurry about in hedgerows and chase anything that runs so a terrier experienced home may be best. With the right environment Butch will definitely pay you back with loyalty and love.

All Hope Rescue dogs are neutered (if over 6 months), vaccinated, flea treated, wormed and micro-chipped prior to adoption. A homecheck will be required, and you will need to come and meet the dog with your own dogs and family. We have a suggested minimum donation of £160. Hope Rescue rehomes throughout the UK.
