No we are not a little sensitive.. why should we be?? for the record *I* am not a little sensitive either..

My post means that I stand by what I said.. I think breed clubs are the way to go and that "all breed" rescues are not.. (unless the dogs happen to be a mixture of all breeds)

Fair enough, bit why not say that in the first place?
Their was nothing in my post that warranted the tetchiness.

It is nice AnneUK (or anyone) praise my post, but it is immaterial to me posting, as i am using my *own* professional knowledge and experience.
Also, i guess you didnt see the thread when AnneUK very directly objected to my different opinion to hers?

I did say i have no issue with general rescues sending dogs to breed rescues.
But i have been in this business for over a decade, and it was me at my rescue that was the breed rescue liaison, and i did send breeds to breed rescues, or breed rescues sent their applicants to us.

That's the thing, not all breed rescues actually want to take the dog away from the general rescue.

I liaised with Battersea as well, who also have a breed rescue rep.

Naturally, just like everyone else (general rescues included), there *are* bad breed rescues..aside form the issues i listed, *some* can be just awkward, and some breed rescues phone you and tell you not to trust another breed rescue in the same breed (and vice versa), so you are best avoiding these particular breed rescues entirely, otherwise you get dragged into their personal politics.

So as well as doing my own work, i followed Batterseas list of approved and non-approved breed rescues.

Some breeds - like GSD's and Staffies - are so specialised.
they crop up in generla rescues in vast numbers.
some general rescues actually have highly qualified and trained staff and dog trainers and behaviourists...it is not beyond their remit to understand a GSD, for example.

Some breed rescues are just to full or busy, so are happy for you to carry on by yourself - GSD and Staffie, for example.

Also, why would you think that just because it is a "general breed" rescue, that they would not have staff specialised in certain breeds? (we did). Just as likely that staff at breed rescues can have general and/or other breed knowledge.

Lastly, if the breed rescue, or that particular person that is working for the breed rescue at the time, is quite bad or has some of the problems i mentioned before, so you know the dog will suffer the consequences, do you really believe that you should use that breed rescue just because it is called a breed rescue?

I did say i have some horror stories, but it is indiscreet to print them on here, but you can PM and ask if you like.

No offence intended

How is that relevant? I was going to post a reply until I saw krusewalkers' post, there's not really much point in me stating the exact same points. I've previously disagreed with krusewalker on another thread but it would be pretty petty to hold a grudge wouldn't it? I for one am grateful that there are some good breed rescues out-there just as I'm am grateful for the good general rescues. It's a shame not all rescues live up to the same high standards - either breed or general. The more properly run rescues the better, believe me they're needed.

Anyhow back on topic; I personally like the idea of a rescue considering suitable Collies for working homes (providing it's also a pet home), just as I'm all in favour of collies going to homes where they'll be involved in agility. The most common reason for collies ending up in rescue is due to the owners not providing the dog with enough mental and physical stimulation, resulting in owners not coping with negative behaviour displayed as a result. Unfortunately there aren't enough homes available for all the unwanted collies, so any avenue which helps find them a suitable home is a good idea imo.

Erm, guys, please, any chance of sticking to the thread/post content instead of whose name is on a post..... so it does`nt become another personality battle like the on/off lead thread :smt105
The thread is about dogs of working breeds being homed to a working life suited to them or alternative suitable activities when applicable, not about rescues in general and I for one would like to read/participate on the working aspect, not just read a load of virtual pokes in the eyes sparked by personality clashes - pretty please ?

My old girl incidentally, [ bridge baby ], she was a [ rescued ], Lab x Poodle and she had a little sheep `assessment` bless her, and she turned out to be the perfect sheepdog

Did she want to herd them ?

Well, urm, no, not exactly, she was oblivious to the sheep, took no notice of them at all....

But they were so fascinated by her, as she looked a bit like a little tan sheep, that they kept following her everywhere she went, walked when she walked, trotted when she trotted, stopped and started moving every time she did, so if I`d walked her into a pen ahead of them there would have been none of the running around needed by a proper working dog as the sheep would have just followed her in by themselves :smt044

So heres me with 4 Collies who cant work sheep three because they are deaf and white, [ one with high working drive yet with the self control which many working their dogs dream of ], and one because she is terrified of sheep but my darling little bridge baby crossbreed would have been brilliant at it :smt016
