Great about your course - agility is a little different
When people talk about training for that most of it is training you both so you know how to position your body and understand where he will be going and stuff
Its alot about training you both to work together
Ahh that makes more sense

I know you may not have read the replies and I'm going to sound like a broken record soon :P. I will likely be taking him to classes.
Once the instructor has trained me :P, I will then buy equipment. I've seen others use their own equipment and I plan on doing the same, but I will go to classes first.

Also part of the fun is meeting other doggy people and having a chat! A lot of my agility class is taken up by gossiping and eating cake... with agility runs in between!

I didn't start agility until Skye was 3yrs old we only do it for fun, i have no intentions of competing although Skye is very good at it going to a class is definitely the way to go, for safety and to learn how to handle correctly. You will never stop learning in agility, which is all part of the fun we also eat lots of cake, drink lots of coffee, and have a good laugh too, and its a fab way to socialise your little doggy
Beware though............its highly addictive

Honestly, yes. It's far too easy for dogs to get injured in agility and I prefer to have someone who knows how to do it work with me.

I started last summer with my dog. She was around 4 to 4 1/2 years old when we started (and we're just doing it for fun too). She's having blast, but we're learning things slowly and teaching her the proper way. I never would have known about jump grids, about playing jumps to teach her how to properly jump at the height she needs to (20 inches for my girl), etc. Taking the classes has been invaluable!

Yes yes yes! So much of agility class is about teaching the humans how to move properly so as not to screw up where the dog goes!

I started agility classes 12 years ago just to keep my border collie mentally occupied - I now have five collies (yes, still the original one!) all competing to different levels and it's taken over my life! I still train at least twice a week because you are always learning, every dog runs differently and requires different handling and methods and types of course are evolving all the time so you have to keep your handling up to date if you want to shave those hundredths of a second off your dog's course time in order to even get into the placings, let alone win!

I know you say you only want to do it for fun but, if you did decide to compete, it is much easier to learn the different techniques from scratch rather than try to amend the bad habits you have developed on your own - and much more fun for the dog if you are handling them smoothly and purposefully.

Good luck and well done for wanting to help your dog lead a more interesting life!

But thanks for your advice
