Im quite sad really when it comes to this lol.

I sit down before i go shopping and write a list of all the things i need. I then write a list of all the dinners i fancy for the next week. Added to my list of general stuff goes any ingredients to make said meals for the week.

Then i try and have the meals i set out because otherwise i spend far more on the weekly shop, i still cant decide what to eat, i dont have the sutff i need for a particular meal i suddenly fancy or i end up wasting food and i hate doing that!

It doesnt always work but for the most part it is much easier and cheaper (for me anyway!) than just going without a list or an idea of meals.
