Nearly chopped my finger off

Just been splitting logs out the back.

Not quite sure how I managed it but I swung the axe (3lb head / hickory handle hatchet) down onto the log I was steadying with my left hand and hit my wedding ring.

Fortunately my ring was resting against the flat cut side of the log so there was no give - It was a fairly hefty blow but my ring (thank god) is a very heavy thick ring so the axe just kind of kicked back up.

I guess I was a bit distracted by the dogs being around me pinching the sticks but it's safe to say 1/4" either side and the dogs would have had some nice treats.
