Fun vs Companion Show

Bit of a dim question here, but what's the difference between a fun and a companion show? Is there a difference?

A companion show should be a KC licenced event, for which the organisers will have had to pay for a KC licence and obtained public liability insurance. They would also have to conform to the no dogs exhibited under 6 months of age and ensure that the monies raised (at least half i think now) go to a registered charity.

A fun show would be one which is not licenced by the KC, at which no KC judge should officiate and technically no dog shown under KC rules should take part in. Some also don't have public liability insurance.

As Kate has said. The only other thing to add is a companion dog show will always have pedigree classes as the KC requests this and you have to pick classes from their lists. A fun show can do what they want, pedigree and novelty classes or just novelty classes. With a KC companion show certain rules apply, no dogs under 6 months to be exhibited and no dogs with a CC, RCC or JW can enter the pedigree classes. At a fun show it's open to all unless the organisers state it in the flyer.
Think the view of judging and exhibiting at fun shows is now a bit antiquated though. The KC have bigger concerns to think about. Think it was just done so that show organisers put some money the KC's way and it was done under a KC licence. I contacted the KC when I was judging a fun show and to be honest they didn't care. I'm also going to one in a couple of weeks and the judge is a very well known one that anyone showing would know. I'll also show my dogs at fun shows, especially when they were pups as it's so useful for socialisation and training.

They tried the old ` not allowed to compete in non-KC events` business in agility too - they failed - [ it did get challenged to stop them being dictators about it ].
They can`t dictate what people can`t enter or judge just because its not an event they are making money from, a KC judge doing the job at a non-KC show is a member of the public like any other.
I`m a qualified KC Agility judge and they can`t stop me judging at a non-KC competition or running an unaffiliated show with my unaffiliated club any more than they can, [ legally ], stop a Breed judge at a fun show.

My agility club will be doing a Fun show, [ early planning stages underway - madmare crack on ], and will hopefully be including Crossbreed and Mongrel Club official classes if they are ok with it when we get in touch with them.

The KC `powers that be` can put that in their proverbial pipe and smoke it

In Ireland the situation is completely different. If you show at Irish Kennel Club (IKC) events you not only have to have your dog registered, like in the UK, but you have the join the IKC too. They don't have anything to do with shows other than Limit, Open and Championship shows and our equivalent of fun or companion dog shows is the agricultural or "flapper" shows. As IKC members we are not allowed to compete, nor may we judge at such shows without fear of a formal warning or even a fine. I believe some people do it but I wouldn't take the risk since it would also mean not being approved to judge as well, probably.
At least it stops accusations and mutterings about "professionals" which I heard around the Essex exemption shows, as they were called back then.
