Puppy activity before vaccinations

I have a new 7 week old boxer pup, healthy and active. He's just had his first vaccination yesterday which leaves a couple months to go before he is fully immunized.

Ive read on this site about not letting him on the ground before that time. That is very clear to me since diseases like parvo are extremely contagious. The thing is, in that thread they were talking about parks and other public places. I have fairly large front and back yards that are completely fenced. I have not had any dogs with infectious diseases on my property for several years now. Is it safe for the puppy to walk around in the yard before he has had all his shots?

If it were me I would keep him to the back of the property but yes your own back garden/yard should be okay.

Congratulations on having one of the best kind of dogs on the planet -not of course that I am biased or anything!

Look forward to chatting and photos

The window of socialisation is very small and closes at about 16 weeks therefore it is essential that yoru dog is adequately socialised and habituated prior to this time as this time cannot be made up.

This means that if you wish to raise a competent and confident dog that you at least need to expose him to all the sights and sounds he may come across in later life.

You can accomplish this by carrying your dog around places or, if he is too heavy pushing him around in a stroller etc.

Thes links may help you understand the importance of this.

You can certainly put your dogs in the garden and remember, unless you take off your outdoor shoes, you are bringing potential bacteria and viruses into the house all the time.

Personally I put my puppies on the ground the day I get them at 7 weeks as it is my own view that more dogs are put down due to behavioural problems than catch disease, but that is MY decision for MY dogs.

YOU must do whatever you think is right for YOUR dog.

Good luck!

ps here is a statement on socialisation v vaccination from the AVSAB

Yes, your garden should be quite safe, enjoy your new little bundle

You can always ask your vet if they hold puppy parties to give him the opportunity to socialise inbetween jabs. These vet parties are a lot more controlled than some of the others, as they only let two off at any one time, unlike the mayhem at other puppy parties I've heard about. It also gives you a great opportunity of getting him familiarised with the vet surgery which is always a bonus.

I bought a second hand pushchair for our Mal pup. We may have looked like nutters but it meant I could get her out and about. I take mine out from day one, on the beach etc.

Try carrying one nearly 5 months old in & out of the car to the vets with 5 steps up to the vets. He was nearly 5 months before he got his second Vacc due to intesinal problems

It never did his socialisation any harm not getting out & about. Dont forget you can take them out & about in the car. Carry them to & fro

Everyone has their own way of doing things, we always go on the advice of the vet.

Thanks for all the responses. It puts my mind at ease to know I can let him run around in the garden. I fully appreciate the importance of early socialization. I have seen too many unstable dogs that were locked away during those early months. If I have to carry him, then I will. I guess I need the exercise anyway.. lol

Well, his second shot is 3 weeks from now, and his third is one month after that, and his fourth is one month after that. The vet also said that I have to wait two weeks after his last vaccine before I let him out.

My akita/belgian will be thrilled to have a new buddy after my doberman died last year. Hes well socialized and good with other dogs.

This is Havok

Please excuse the bad photos. Sometimes I'm too lazy to grab my camera
