As far as dog communication goes, growls are normally controlled warnings and it was totally over the top for Ben to take this as a cue to attack. As others have said, there may have been body language that Ben ignored beforehand - he is known for being a DA dog for years, I don't see how you can blame the neighbour's dog at all.
I totally agree with everything you say - but you have to understand that Ben is antisocial, unsocialised, and to be quite honest when we first took him on aggressive towards us if we made him do what he did not want to do. We have worked through all this, he is a delight to own. He is sweet with strangers, he is everything I could ever want him to be, he has the best recall now of any dog I have ever owned, whilst still retaining his naughtiness and sense of fun. I adore that dog nearly as much as I adored his father, but .... it is hard to make up for 3 years of total lack of any sort of life, tied up on concrete with no shelter, never going out for walkies, never meeting any dogs, then a couple of years of not much better life until he had a few good months with his next 2 owners. I don't honestly know exactly how he thinks, I don't know why he is apparently racist - I don't know, but I am doing everything I can to find out and help him.

And whoever criticised my OH for having the 2 boys on a harness, you can get knotted. How dare you on the one hand accuse us of being irresponsible and not having our dogs under control, and then when we do criticise us for that too! Believe me, 2 dogs weighing 90 kilos are never going to be 100% under control by an old git of 62 weighing 80 kilos. So OH very sensibly has invested a lot of money in ensuring that when he has the 2 boys on the lead, he is totally 100% in control - bearing in mind Ben's serious DA.

Jeez ... damned if you do, damned if you don't!!

But you said the dog is black and your dog hates black dogs-----so why do you think he was being friendly to this one?

All very bad I know, but as these things always do happen in such a way, it all happened very quickly.

The insurers won't contact the vet until they have a response from next door. They have told us that. They have told my husband that there is nothing they can do until they (the neighbours) respond. Remember this is not dog insurance, it is our house insurance that we are covered by.

What do you think will happen to me if I go round, bang on their door and ask if I can come in to see the originals? Do you think there is just a slight chance that once again I will told to f off, and that I am a f'ing c you next Tuesday? Would you like to do that?

Sorry to have a go at you, I don't mean to be aggressive, but I don't think you quite realise how upsetting it is to be told that you are f'ing arrogant when you have plucked the courage to ring up and enquire how a dog who you extremely fond of is doing, following his "emergency" visit to the vet?
You said earlier, that she would have seen you indicating she should have waited , yet now you say she came out of the gloaming like that so maybe she did not see you either, till it was to late.

I agree about the vets bills I would want to see the originals , or speak to her vet, but the rest of it, to be honest, (and its nothing to do with whether I like you or not) is down to you, you have neighbours who have right of way across your drive, you know your dog can be aggressive, so you should have taken more care, instead you place blame on her for daring to walk down your drive or past your fence.

No one has to understand Ben. Not even you, but you are responsible for controlling him. Knowing what you know, having done the work you've done, no way should he be loose in front of the house or in a garden with such low fencing, and neither of those factors are in any way your neighbour's fault.

You're obviously a lot richer than me then darling!

Me, I like proof before I write out a cheque for what is probably going to be well in excess of £700.

But, they do say fools and their money are soon parted, so if you would be happy to pay what could be a fraudulent set of bills, then I'm glad I'm not you!

Why not contact the vet and ask them to confirm that the figure is that on the invoice? They may not be able to give a copy of the invoice to you but they may at least confirm the total if you explain the sitution.

Probably you would get that response if you went round and banged on their door without warning, yes. I personally would ring first. If I got a load of abuse, fair enough. If not, I'd go round, look at the bills, thank them politely after confirming they were the same as the copies and leave (no matter what was said by the other party while I was there)

Which is EXACTLY what we are doing ... with the harness that OH wears round his waist, with the over the top Fort Knox garden, with the fact that we no longer tether them on the drive - not because they could escape, but because it might be threatening for the neighbours if they come across the drive at that moment.

No way shall he be loose in front of the house now, nor in the garden with low fencing.

So what's your point then?

But I don't want to be called the c word on the phone, any more than I do face to face!! Believe me, that is one mad, mad angry woman - she's like a woman possessed!!

She is more likely to stab me through the heart than she would be to allow me to enter her portal!! Nice thought though - in normal circumstances with a reasonable person that is exactly what one would do, but believe me, she ain't reasonable.

We have - they wouldn't talk to us because of confidentiality. Wouldn't confirm they were even a client.
