Effect of protein on bone growth !

My friend took her 13 week old pup to her first training class and was advised to feed her a dog food with less protein ( She has been brought up and is currently fed Royal Canin )

She was told that too high a protein will advance bone growth too much and lead to problems such as HD or the like in future.

Expert opinions would be appreciated

Well you know what they say about experts...............

they are just drips........... ;_

The person who told her is a canine nutritionist with qualifications?

One of the first things you learn as a dog trainer, is "know your limits", advise on what you know about and refrain from that which you are not paid to advise on.

Which is why I was skeptical !

Still - I thought that it might be worth an ask in case somebody had experience of this type of research !

Protein is not the issue, over supplementation is eg with calcium etc.

HD isn't caused by too much protein in a dog's diet, a very poor diet can make it worse(like my Jesscee who was fed cr@p for the first 15 months of her life)

I don't feed a complete food as a major part of my dog's diet, but puppy food is developed for puppies & I would expect quite a high level of protein in puppy food, I certainly give my puppies more protein in their diet

I havent heard an issue with too much protein
Too much energy so the dogs grow too quickly could be an issue
also as SB say supplimenting things like calcium can be issues - if you suppliment one thing then another thing will be depleated

Actually giant breeds need low protein. Dogs fed a high protein food can start knucking over.

I think this is the new fad. I`ve heard this a few times as a cure for behaviour, temperament and even house-training issues.
None of which have anything to do with it of course.
I expect low-protein food (being instead full of filler and fat?) is cheaper, but I can`t imagine how it would alter a dogs` conformation.

You need to research your breed. In the U.S. we have large breed puppy kibble, which is formulated for slower growth. Some people with large breeds feed puppy food for the first couple of months, then switch to adult food to slow growth down. If you have a small breed, it is not a concern.

I'm a bit confused by your post - don't these two statements sort of contradict each other?

Personally, I feed the large breed puppy kibble to my border collie puppies until they are about 9/10 months old and then change to adult food.
