Types of dogs

If you took away the KC groups, how would you classify dogs into groups?

Some already exist:

Molosser Dogs
Nordic Breeds
Flock Guardians
Sheepdogs
Scent hounds
Sight hounds
Bull breeds
Spitz
Cross Breeds
Pure Breeds

etc

Can you think of any more?

I don't 'get' the categorizing of a lot of breeds.

Most of the working group don't work for instance. I know they worked once but the vast majority don't now so it is a bit farcical.

Dalmatians worked once - why are they in the Utility group and not the working? likewise with Poodles.

Why are Yorkshire Terrier's in the toy group and not the terrier group? they are terrier through and through.

I would leave the Gundog category as it is. The terrier/toy/hound/pastoral group I would mostly leave but would maybe swap a few breeds around. As for the others like you said you could divide up into Primative breeds, Bull breeds, Northern breeds, Molosser breeds and then leave the Utility category for the ones that don't fit anywhere else.

But the bull breeds and Molossoid (sp)breeds cross over a lot ..

A St Bernard and Pug are both Molosser dogs..

I have always thought the same with Poodles, Dalmatians and the Yorkie. Isn't there a breed of sighthound also in the toy group too... or is it another breed I'm thinking of.

The KC brought in these groups in the late 1800's. So you would've thought that the dogs who were meant to be in the working group, would still be doing the actual jobs they were bred for.

some of it is weird.

ive been to some dog shows and have found bullmastiffs in working and pastoral groups - surely they are either one or the other?

would make it easier if they were uniform and didnt have cross overs
