long haired akita?!

Well I asked the lady at dog training today what her dog was cause I couldn’t work it out and she said it was an Akita but a long haired one, it was really fluffy. Has anyone ever heard of one of these before, I thought there was only the one type of Akita?

Yep i have, a very close friend of mine breeds akitas, she doesnt have long hairs in her lines but a friend of hers does!! They are gorgeous, like big teddy bears lol i'll see if i can get a pic to show you, they are classed as a throw backs apparently, not show standard, but still great pets and gorgeously huggable

Yep long haired Akita are fairly common, although thankfully nobody has cottoned onto breeding them solely!
Dawn.

Dawn.
people do breed them actually, I have seen breeders advertising long haired akitas in my local paper. There are no health faults associated with the long coat gene so I dont suppose the dogs will be any less akitas than the short coated ones. I find it odd that you say "thankfully" no one is breeding them? why should coat colour or length etc matter if someone just wants a dog as a pet?
not everyone wants a perfect show dog, in fact the majority of people who buy a puppy want a family pet. I dont see anything wrong with longcoated akitas or german shephereds etc but of course if you can take a rescue dog instead of buying apuppy then this is a great idea as there are thousands of dogs out there, all coat types and colours and lengths etc that need homes.

I think what dawn means is, thank god we dont have a population boom of akitas because they are a specialist breed and farming them could be very very dangrous as their temperment needs careful handling and sociolisation.

I agree though i dont agree with people slanging dogs that arent the 'correct' colour.
