How to Choose a Trainer

Jean Donaldson just posted this from the AVSAB, good guidelines IMHO

Interesting to see that in AVSAB's view punishment has a place in behaviour modification.

It is impossible to train a dog or a person without the use of any punishment.

But I (and several other trainers I know) would be happy to attend the workshop/seminar that can demonstrate that this is a false premise.

I guess it depends on what is meant by punishment.

For me the punishment has to be (a) something you are personally comfortable with (b) effective, i.e. the punishment has to work, if it has to be used continually then it ain't working! (c) humane, i.e. use of fancy collars / devices / alpha type techniques don't sit well with me at all - back to (a) again. For example, punishment that might be withdrawal of reward can be a better technique sometimes.

Punishment is punishment.

What method you choose is your decision.
