Old tricks for new dogs: saying yes to no

Any thoughts? I like the sound of it.

I can but hope we get back to a more balance sensible and balanced view of training as proposed here, (and likewise child rearing!).

"No" and establishing/maintaining boundaries has become a taboo, rather than aspect and a sensible part of an intelligent, overall training/rearing strategy.

Unfortunately it is more in the nature of pendulums to swing widely from one side to the other, rather than to balance in the middle.

Oh SB doesn't look at all like I imagined her to be

Funny how you think of people on here and we probably all look different to that!

Lol, instead of posting stuff on here and hoping SB will answer, we can all ring her up now!!

But anyway, back to the article. I think we have reached the point where we are too positive. I think it's about balance. I for one wont hesitate to chastise my dog...Some people are reluctant to even take their dog by the collar for fear of it being seen negatively.

I'm finding it difficult at the moment as if I have to say no to Parker (usually if I am talking to someone and he is wuffing to move on ) I have to speak quite loudly as he's gone a bit deaf! People must think I am a right bully shouting at him like that.

I am sure none of us look like each other expect

as for saying 'no'
Although I get the point I find in general that people havent moved away from saying 'no' yet to be saying yes too much

It seems that in general people tend to not train something and then keep telling the dog they are bad for not doing the thing they havent been trained to

Or they say 'no' in a really angry tone
I say 'no' to my dogs for example if they get the weaves wrong, but gently
If I am teaching anyone I get them to say something like 'try again' rather than 'NO!'

I dont see a problem with saying 'that isnt the thing I wanted you to do'

But its the getting angry cos the dog is 'stubborn' or 'doing it wrong to spite them'
