Collar or Harness.

With Louie he was on a harness from 12 weeks. Now I've read this can do more damage than good.

So what do I do when I start walking Pennie? I'm a little confused.. (nothing new)

She's 5kg and is about the size of well a huge guinea pig (she squeaks!) so really size of a Yorkie, maybe a bit smaller. Now she isn't going to stay that size but what do I walk her on whilst she is this size?

I'm a great fan of harnesses - especially for puppies.

Instead of the pressure going onto the throat area as the pup inevitably runs around on the lead, it is spread.

I've never found it any more difficult to teach a dog to loose lead walk on a harness as opposed to a collar.

I am talking here of standard, static harnesses and not the non-pull type

I am not sure where you read that harnesses can do more harm than good?

Where did you read this and what was the source?

After attending several seminars with regard to musculo skeletal disorders (am attending another one with Tony Nevin the Osteopath next Saturday) there is an increasing school of thought that harnesses may be the way to go especially with puppies and untrained dogs.

When trained then move over to a collar.

This is the route I am going to take with my next pup after researching, reading and watching.

But I would be interested in you pointing me in the direction of where I can find information on harm from harnesses.

ETA I too am talking about static harnesses.

I've read something somewhere about them being bad for bones or something - I can't really remember which suggests I probably read it wrong. I will try and find it though.

Harness it is then Sorted!

What do you mean about static harnesses?

Do you mean normal ones rather than ones that change when the dogs pull (like a choke chain but usually around the chest)?

If I were to guess, I would think what you have read relates to some of the non-pull type harnesses which unbalance the dog as the lead goes taught.

Yes, making sure that they also fit correctly

Ah I see.

I saw a non-pull harness the other day where the strap around the tummy was cord rather than webbing that shorted with tension...ouch.

Not a fan of those at all.

What about the halti harness? I like that as it attaches at the front but even the small one is too big for Jin -.-

I'm just going to buy a cheap one - she'll not be in it long.. Might even have one left over from Louie.

I used a harness----a 'static' lupine one which matched her collar and lead.

I'd always go that way now.
