Awwww, but at least now she's back in there Lynne, they can keep her as pain free as they possibly can. Don't worry too much about that slurred speech etc. coz I think that's down to the extra strong painkillers, I've seen it with my mum on Codeine Phosphate (that spaces them out!) and that Tramodyl (sp? could be Tramadol?) my mum didn't even know who she was or where she was on that stuff! I'm sure that severe pain in your back can emulate itself to the front too, due to nerves going here, there and everywhere in the body, so that could be quite normal. I just hope they keep her relatively painfree until they decide what they can do for her, the poor old sausage. Give her a gentle hug from me when you next go and visit please. I do hope things improve for her though, bless. xxxxxx Take care Lynne and good luck with the patience bit, I'm like that too, I don't do patience either!xxxxxxx

Update

The docs think it is a hairline fracture of the same bit of her back as she broke before the T12 vertebrae, they think the hairline crack has trapped the nerve but are not sure - helpful huh!!, they reckon the nerve is now trapped within the fracture causing the intense pain, but need a specialist to review the test results. But due to the osteoarthritis in her spine there is very little they can do except wait on bone density results to see how feasible inserting metal rods would be. If the degeneration is that bad that may not even be an option and painkilers, physio and inevitably pain will be there for ever more.

I am not going to see her today as I have a cough and bark that would put Ben to shame and I can just imagine trying to cough like this with a sore back

Good and Bad news here!! There is definitely a hairline fracture in the vertebrae, but there is no evidence that the nerve is trapped, however it may well have been trapped or nicked at the pooint when she bent down and that caused the instant intense pain. Her muscles have all gone into spasm which is causing the continued pain around her back.

Her chest pains were caused by...wait for this.....her gall bladder.

Yes you may remember reading that she had this removed some 30 or so years ago. She did indeed however it seems that they left part of her gall bladder inside her. This has continued to harbour some enzymes and there has been a blocked duct. It is advisable that she has this removed as eventually it will start to die and poison her, however in the meantime she has been given medication to treat the blocked ducts ( i am sure she said it is something to do with enzymes) whilst we all try to persuade herthe op is necessary. She has to go and see her doc about that so they are in no hurry to remove it.

She is getting home with loads of painkillers and is not getting morphine home with her which is pleasing her no end. I am going to try to find out about a referral to a pain clinic for her.

So as it stands her osteoarthritis is pretty severe (new medication for that) she has a hairline fracture in her spine, she has muscular pain, the nerve may be slightly damaged (but not beyond healing) she has painkillers for this and she has discovered she has a gall bladder or at least some of it that she thought was removed!

But at least she is getting home she has an appt atthe docs next Monday at 8.30 (I told her she should get the doc to come out but she says dad can take her )

So worry temporarily over and hope with time and meds the pain will ease for her

I have to say, when the doctor told me she thought it may be a problem with my gall bladder and she would book me in for an ultra sound scan at the hossy, I asked how long it would take....when she told me how long, I was like...no way Im living with this any longer than need be, so I went private a few days later... nothing of relivance showed on the scan, but they did say that it would be miniscule {sp?} bits of grit, like a grain of sand or smaller, it was agony, god knows how people cope with stones in there the pain for me felt like it was at the same level as my heart or just slightly below that height but on the other side,

So sorry you're still getting bad news Lynne, but I will say this, when my mum had her very first fall and fractured her hip, it was a hairline fracture, and yet she was in agony with it for a long time, and it was only when she fell again and BROKE the hip and they operated, made it even stronger than before, that she was completely out of pain, so I would imagine, even a slight hairline fracture of a bone anywhere must be agony, your poor old mum

I hope you get somewhere with everyone concerned and get something done as soon as these holidays are over, they should make her priority, which I'm sure they will. You take care, and hugs for dear old mum.xxxxxx

Thanks guys.. I am much happier that she is at home though. Mums chest pain was pretty much central Shona but slightly above the line your bra would take and she described it as a crushing pain which bored deep into her chest. She said it was like a vice being tightened.

At least they now have it being sorted, of course initially they didn't checkl any of that as according to records she has no gall bladder there!!

H,I will make it my personal mission to ensure that hey help her with the pain as I hate seeing people in pain especially my own family and in my opinion there should beno need for it in this day and age especially when they know the cause.

A saving grace is she is so sore that moving is difficullt so she will HAVE to rest up for a bit!

Thanks again to everyone for your good wishes x
