Too Old For Adoption - A Poem

TOO OLD FOR ADOPTION

I’ve only got a few years left, I would so like a home.
A nice warm fire, a friendly pat, a master of my own.
I’ve lived in cardboard boxes in a garden for three years.
Even then they didn’t want me ‘cos I’m getting on in years.

And now I’m in kind kennels but my neighbours come and go.
And people come and look at me and say’ “Perhaps” and “No”.
I’d be so little trouble, I’m so used to being alone.
So perhaps if you are elderly, I’d love to share your home.

I couldn’t play with children, that’s the one point I would fail.
For because I was neglected, I have a damaged tail.
I think my days are numbered though I’ve still so much to give
And the moneys getting scarcer but oh! I would so like to live.

By the time you read this poem it will probably be too late.
But adopters think of older dogs so they don’t all meet my fate.
