I'm so sorry to read this thread. But I would like to say that my late GSD Kudos was diagnosed with advanced kidney disease at 5 years of age. He was going through a tough time and the vet wasn't optimistic at all, giving him an absolute maximum of 2 years left With a carefully monitored diet and loads of love and special attention Kudos finally went to Rainbow Bridge last year at the grand old age of 13 1/2. His passing had nothing to do with his kidneys, which were still functioning well - he had a severe stroke, bless him So don't give up hope on your boy. He can still lead a full and active life, you just need to be more cautious and aware with him. Good luck xx

Thanks, you have made me feel more positive about Loki. I'm looking at him and his coat is thick and beautiful, his eyes are bright. He doesn't look ill at all. The only signs are his limp, which comes and goes (possible calcification of the tendons or bone pain) and his grotty breath. Took him out this morning and he was running and playing and looked so happy, so I'm sure there's hope for him. He's now on filtered water, a low phosphorus diet and omega 3 and vitamin e supplements. He's much happier since the accupuncture on Wednesday, too, which I would recommend for anyone with an achy dog.

So pleased to hear you are feeling a bit more positive, and thrilled that Loki is feeling and looking so well. Fingers crossed it will continue and he will also have a long and enjoyable life xx

Very sorry to read this. As others have said keep hopeful. We're off for a walk tomorrow with a cocker spaniel who's still enjoying life despite kidney failure. I really hope you and Loki have a lot more happy times to enjoy.

Thanks everyone. I read something yesterday that said that dogs showing Loki's symptoms soon die after diagnosis. I think that's a load of tosh, because Loki has ALWAYS dranks loads, peed loads and had bad breath despite his healthy diet. I think we can keep him stable and happy for years to come. And definitely NO prescription diets! No way jose!
