It sounds as if your dog has IBD.
This article explains it
http://www.peteducation.com/article....2+2090&aid=305

When our Chessie had the same symptoms that your dog has, our vet started with the steroids but the drug that worked for him was Sulfasalazine, alongside Trimcare antibiotic and Pro Kolin paste

Nearly forgot, the food that worked for him and the only food he can now have is Chappie tinned original

Hi thanks for the response,I really dont know the cause of my dogs problem, only that it may occur once a month then in two months etc. Theres no set pattern. It does not seem to bother her much, she is full of life and fun.The only way she is affected is terrible grumblings from her stomach, and she stops eating till it clears, which is normally 24 hours. She was examined by the vet who stated she was in perfect condition. But we all know our dogs well. I still worry.Gordon

Hi Gordon, unfortunately we lost our beloved Bindi back in January 2010 due to a choking incident with a ball - it's very sad and it still saddens me to this day that we wasn't able to save her...

In answer to your question the Hills seemed to be working as she was diagnosed (after autopsies taken from intestines etc) with IBD. To be honest it was very touch and go with Bindi some days she seemed fine and then others it would the effects of IBD would happen again. Although she was diagnosed the vets didn't really know what to do with her other than steroids and prescription only diet in the end (wet food). We changed vets and this helped as the vet was a specialist in this but it was just 2 months after that we lost Boo so we never got any further in being able to make her more comfortable.

My 6 year old border is having sensitive stomach and has all her life. She has stopped vomiting bile after 2 days but is just not herself (lethargic) and just acts off and does not want to eat her Pure Vita Turkey formula without wheat. The holistic vet has given me herbs but I wonder if they are not agreeing with her either. I give her a little probiotic daily now as she won't eat her yogurt that she loved before. Previous regular vet had her on Prescription Diet for sensitive tummies (ID) but she has been on the recent food for over a year. I have to mix in treats to get her to eat it. I just don't know what to do at this point. Continue with holistic vet or find another regular vet. Stools are normal thankfully, but behavior is off. I can't stand to have her suffering. Any ideas would be so appreciated. Thank you. Perhaps I should try the no food approach for 24 hours and introduce rice and chicken in small portions.

Hi my border is now fine thanks to a lovely man in our local pet shop. The solution was to feed her with a small portion of rice at breakfast and for her main meal again rice mixed with chicken or tuna fish. After a few days the blood discharged in her poo stopped and she stopped vomiting. She is and has been for the last few years a happy lively dog confirmed by the vet.I have since been feeding her tinned dog meat and all is fine.Hope this helps.Gordon.

Thank you Gordon - decided to try this route instead of rushing her to the emergency vet. She wakes up fine and it is after eating that she starts to not feel well with stomach gurgling and wanting to rest more than usual. I will give this a try for several days and see how she feels and then make a decision as to the next step. I hesitate to change her food to another type but perhaps it might be a good idea to slowly introduce another more specific protein type of food (Bison maybe). Will have to check more on that. Thank you again, and will definitely give your ideas a try - rice is cooking now! Gale

Hi Bugzey,
I had the same problem with my BT, I solved completely the problem with rigid diet.
Use monoprotein food based on FISH
My dog stopped all symtoms.
I completely solved all her problems her life changed radically, she is another dog, happy and strong.
Now she can eat: potatoes, legumes (especially beans, lentils, chickpeas), fish, organic meat (possibly rabbit) in small doses , eggs, low quantity of fresh cheese and yogurt.
Absolutely NO CEREALS - NO LOW QUALITY MEAT - NO SOYA -
I hope this message will help you!
bye
Silvia

Thank you. I actually followed someone on here that told me to put her on chicken and rice, which I did for several weeks and her stomach settled now. I then slowly introduced her to cooked stew with venison, zucchinis, carrots, celery and a few other human foods. It has worked and she now is happy and healthy. I also give her an occasional 1/2 of pepcid if I hear her tummy upset. Thank you for taking the time.

Thank you for back in August. What you suggested worked and she is now on cooked dog stew that is made locally which has the main protein as Venison. You saved us both so much agony. I can't believe a holistic veterinarian could not figure that out, and I am so thankful you did.
