Thanks again everyone. I have given Craig a nice warming meal and he is now tucked in his kennel with a new bed of straw. He seems pretty happy to be home

He flew down on his quad and a lovely older couple were just putting Craig into the boot of their car. They said they had seen him running around and they didn't want him to get run over and so were taking him to the police.

He was extra pleased to see hubby! All's well that ends well.

Thanks to everyone for your kind wishes and positive thoughts
Oh brilliant - I was dreading a sad ending but it was happy, happy, happy!

So glad he's home.

Wonder what happened, I guess you'll never know for sure. Do you think he just got completely disorientated in the wind?

Allan thinks that is exactly what happened Fiona, although of course as you say we will never know for sure.

He set Craig off to gather about half a mile away from where he was and being an experienced dog was left to it and Allan continued on to where he knew the sheep would start to turn up. Once he saw them coming he then whistled Craig back around to come down to where he was ... but no dog. So he thinks that Craig heard the whistle but the very strong wind and blustery rain may have carried the sound of the whistle and confused Craig so he set off in the wrong direction.
