Hiya!

Please get your bun to a vet as soon as possible - coloured discharge indicates infection and the sooner it is caught, the better the chances of recovery.

It could be one of several things, the two I'd say most likely are -

1) Pasteurella infection (snuffles). Have you heard her sneeze at all? Snuffles is a respiratory tract infection which unfortunately often becomes chronic. They all carry the bacteria but things like stress or other illness can trigger it to cause a problem. It can also affect the eyes, as the tear ducts are somehow connected into the nasal system. The quicker it is caught, the better the chances of a complete recovery, but it often recurs, as the bacteria form abscesses in the lungs and these pop from time to time causing a flare up. One of my buns has a chronic snuffles infection and it is kept under control (though never cured) with antibiotics during flare ups.

2) Myxomatosis - has she been vaccinated within the past 6 months? Are there any signs of swelling around her eye? Unfortunately it's the right time of year and these symptoms sound like they could fit. In unvaccinated buns it is usually fatal.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - hopefully it is neither and is a simple infection which will clear up easily. But in any case, a trip to the vet is definitely needed sooner rather than later. Please let us know how you get on xx

Sounds like it could be snuffles then - thankfully it's usually controllable although your vet may need to be prepared to use some antibiotics that they don't normally use on bunnies! Sometimes it can be irritated by overgrown tooth roots - the root grows up towards the eye and can cause infection in the tear duct - just something to bear in mind if you get recurrences, as it can be worth checking out.

Fingers crossed a course of antibiotics and antibiotic eye drops clear it up nicely!

I would have said it sounds like it could be a tear duct problem initially.

Hope all is sorted out soon and bunny gets better
