Crufts Obedience Day 4
The World Cup
The fourth & final day has arrived & in Obedience it is the fairly new competition of The World Cup
This is a hybrid competition including parts of UK style Obedience & FCI Obedience.
The exercises are Heelwork(as per the UK C class), Hurdle/Retreive(as per the FCI the handler throws the dumbell over a hurdle & the dog jumps a hurldle picks up the dumbell & returns over the hurdle to present & go to heel position), Directed Retrieve(as per FCI the dog is sent to retrieve one of three dumbell laid out in a row), SA(a hybrid exercise-as per UK except that the dog can be commanded into the sit or down) DC(another hybrid the dog is recalled & dropped halfway towards the handler &Then UK style Distance Control is done & the hadler returns to the dog),Sit & Down Stays(UK style) & finally Scent(A scent from UK obedience)
For the first time there is an Overseas Judge, Pat Krause, who is a very experienced judge & competitor in AKC Obedience. She has worked Irish Setters, a Pom & Border Collies & gained their obedience titles.
Obedience in the USA is totally different to UK style Obedience, from the very first classes you are not allowed to give commands to your dog other than as directed by the ring steward(in the UK you can give commands ad lib except in stays from pre Beginners to Novice)& the exercises don't give the judges any room for individuality as we see in the UK. It will be interesting to see how she marks, the round set & to see if another team other than England will win.
A friend is reserve for the Welsh team & she may be competing if the Welsh dog that was injured isn't recovered enough to work
The Draw for the dogs to work is as follows:

11 - Switzerland
One dog from the first team of three works & then one from the next team in the draw. The Stays are done as a mass exercise & the scent done at the end

Sadly Speedy, the Swiss Cairn Ob Champion, isn't in the team He is a lovely little dog with bags of character & I was lucky enough to have cuddles with him the first year the Swiss team came over. The Swiss handlers were lovely & they are very proud to come over & compete, they on the whole aren't too happy with the rigidity of the FCI Obedience & much prefer the UK style
