I'm thinking about breaking the law!

Dogs must be kept on lead at all times between april and september (unless they are fenced in).
Gira does not enjoy this when walking in the woods. I dont either.

I'm tempted to let her loose.
Has anybody else been tempted to do the same?

What is the rationale behind the lead restriction during these months?

We don't have that law in this country... at least not that I know of.

Do you live somewhere where children play or where wildlife may be neting etc at these times? I'm only thinking this as my dogs can't be running free on the beach here between May and October, and we have lots of wild bird reservations where I need to keep them on lead.

Otherwise, as Fudgely says, what is the reason?

Having said that we all could be in a situation where we need to prove we have our dogs under control in public and being on a lead is one way we can do that, or at least you wouldn't be able to say that if they were off.

Basically its the "Bambi" syndrome. Dogs have been known to chase wild animals. Dogs either catch Bambi or chase Bambi's mother and if pregnant, she may have a miscarriage. I guess there is also a size issue, because the law does not apply to cats, since their prey is smaller than Bambi.

The law apply's to all dogs.

In the UK it is illegal to have a dog off lead on a public highway but loads of people do. Or out of control anywhere but again loads of people do. Would guess in Norway it would for the protection of young animals.

What's Gira's recall like?

If it's 100% (really 100%) I'd be tempted to risk it, as you could be absolutely sure she wouldn't chase anything so you'd be obeying the spirit of the law if not the letter.

If her recall is iffy then I would respect the law and have her on a longline so she still had a reasonable amount of room to wander but could be reeled in if necessary.

I`d emigrate! Or maybe buy a bit of land, fence it and run it as a doggy playground. What a dreadful law.

I agree that it's a dreadful law! That means that for half of the year (and the best half of the year too) dogs cannot have a good old romp around and stretch their legs fully.

Dogs need a run off lead, some more than others, and I cant imagine my 2 being confined to lead exercise only for 6 months. Surely deer arent everywhere in Norway? Arent you even allowed to let them off in urban parks?
