Trio of same breed dogs, good or bad idea?

Hello everyone, I am so pleased I stumbled across this fantastic website with great advice.

Would you be able to give me your advice/experience please.

We have 2 Shih Tzu. Female aged 17months and a male aged 14 months. We would like to add another to our gorgeous pair. I have been looking at another Shih Tzu, I have a read a male would be better, the female is top dog and I think she would take to another male better. I was told by a behaviourist today that I should get another Shih Tzu as they will all be too similar and I could then get problems of fighting etc.

I have never heard this and would be interested to hear what you all thought.

I've got 4 all the same breed and all female. They are however all related to each other so may be a different scenario than bringing a 'stranger' in

I would think it would be down to the particular dog not the breed. I don't understand the behaviourist's logic. It's not like you have dogs that are prone to same sex aggression.

Thank you, yes its very strange. Will likely go for another Shih Tzu or maybe a Schnoodle

I think it depends less on the breed than the sex, age and character of the dog!
I'd perhaps avoid bringing in another dog of the same age as the ones you already have as they can get competitive.
Then again, I know of plenty of cases where this hasn't caused any problems..
Good luck with it
