6ft is the legal limit, but the law dont prohibit you from adding trellis to the top also.

Generally, boundaries can be built up to 2m (6' 6") if they are at the back of the garden or if the boundary is at the side, but if the boundary fronts a highway of any kind it must not exceed 1m (3' 3") without first getting express planning permission - however, there may be local restrictions eg in your Title Deeds or controlled by your local planning authority.

Your local planning authority may have local restriction details on their web site.

You can also add something like the Prickler anti-burglar strip to the top.

oops-forgot to add something!

Ask your neighbours and see if they would object to the fence being a little bit higher (not talking Prison height here!).

Mine is just over 7ft closeboard fencing all the way round and i just asked the saw mill to make the planks longer (with longer 6" posts and bigger gravel boards) when ordering the timber.Neither of my neighbours have got a problem cause its gives all of us good privacy.

The prickler strips are not as sharp as you think! I have carpet grippers nailed to back fence to deter anyone from climbing over (garden backs onto playing field).
