I would think would certainly be OK for your initial having a go's

I use a manmat shoulder harness for my wee staffy x when mushing, this is attached to a gangline with bungee in it to the scooter. The shoulder harness is better than the x back harness for smaller dogs as the line doesn't run horizontal to their backs and the x back can end up pulling up on their stomach muscles and taking the power out of their hind legs when trying to pull. (Hope that makes sense.)
