A happy ending for Caz

The longest-serving resident of Battersea Dogs Home has finally found a new owner. Caz had appeared with 11 other dogs in a campaign featured in a national newspaper last Christmas. She was the only dog featured in the article not to find a home. .

Caz, a three-year-old mongrel, captured the heart of Michael Markham, a businessman who read about its plight in The Daily Telegraph. The bitch had paced its kennel for two years without attracting an ounce of interest, even when Battersea changed its name to India for a while to see if that would have more appeal.
"I was sitting in the doctor's surgery and I opened the Telegraph and read about Caz. I was very moved by the article and thought, 'This is destiny. I clearly have to save this dog'," said Mr Markham, who lives on a farm with his wife, Dominique, an art dealer, and three children, near Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire.
"I called Battersea and went to see her. She is such a sweet girl, a beautiful dog. We have seven other dogs and Battersea were a bit concerned about her fitting in. But our dogs love her."Mr Markham, 52, who also teaches law part-time, said: "She has the run of our farm and I have no doubt she is happy, although I get the sense that she feels that at any moment she is going to be sent back.
"Although she's very delicate, she is one of the fastest dogs I have ever seen. She's like an Olympic athlete." Caz officially belongs to Mr Markham's son, Harry, who is six.
"She is as daft as a brush and very social. She was worth saving," Mr Markham said.

What a great ending to such a sad story.

This is what owing a dog is all about.
