Zeus is a stunning 2 year old Broholmer

Zeus is a stunning 2 year old Danish Mastiff (Broholmer). He is a very large dog, weighing about 45kg. Not only is he glorious to look at, he is an incredibly gentle and affectionate boy. He has a heart of gold and loves being made a fuss of.

Zeus is healthy, vaccinated and neutered. When he came into our care he was suffering from erlichia, a disease transmitted by ticks, but he has since made a full recovery thanks to the care of our brilliant volunteers in Greece. He is currently at our shelter outside Athens, ready to make the journey to the UK to find his forever home.

Zeus has been at our shelter for about two months now, after he was found chained up in a local park. It is likely, due to his size, that he was used as an outdoor guard dog for as long as he was useful and then dumped, and has not received the affection and love he so clearly deserves. Despite this neglect and abandonment, he has a wonderfully sweet and loving nature. This handsome, friendly boy is an absolute sweetheart and loves nothing more than rolling onto his back for tickles and cuddles!

Zeus would be best suited living with an active family. As a big boy he has lots of stamina and so needs two, ideally three, 30-40 minute walks a day to keep him stimulated and at his best. He walks well on the lead, but is very strong and will require a firm hand from time to time. At the shelter he isn’t able to get anywhere near the number of walks he needs, as we have so many dogs and so little time, and so he will truly appreciate being with a family who can give him the time and effort to take him out every day. He is a very smart boy and, with some training and time, he should walk off-lead beautifully!

Although Zeus has a very kind, tender nature, he is a big, strong boy and we feel he should be homed with older children or into a family with parents who have experience of owning large breeds, where it is unlikely someone will be trodden on or knocked over by accident. Similarly, because of his strength, he should only be homed with cats if his new family has experience of introducing large, strong dogs to their feline family members. He gets on very well with female dogs, but has had experience of being attacked by male dogs and is rather nervous around them. For this reason, we are only happy to home him as a companion for female dogs or as an only dog.

He is such a gentle, affectionate boy, we are certain he will make a fabulous family member and will bring a huge amount of love and happiness to the family who opens their hearts to him. If you think you can change this wonderful dog’s life and give him the forever home he deserves please get in touch at athensdogrescue_uk@hotmail.co.uk or call us.

If I'm reading it correctly, he has been at the shelter for approximately 8 weeks and some of that time has been spent treating his illness? Is there a bigger problem over there for re-homing?

Just wondering because it will be a traumatic trip over to the UK, the weather is different and then he will still find himself in a shelter until a suitable home comes forward.
