maybe i can help you a bit, my son had a stoma its the same just a different part of the bowel, his was the small bowel.
i had to maintain it for him as he was a baby he never seemed in any pain and have no feeling at the stoma.
i think its more in your mind than the practical side of living with 1 untill it has been reversed.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I've had IBS for 34 years now, but I have had "extreme" conditions for about 5 weeks (they actually stopped about three weeks ago). The colon's never been checked out, so this may be an opportunity to have it done and get it over with. I must admit, I prefer Colonoscopy to Endoscopy (down the throat?). A camera up me bum is preferable I think
I tried to make light of it with Baz and said "blimey, I hope it's not a flipping Polaroid". Baz's response was "wait till you see the film crew"
I'm off to see the consultant at 7.30pm, so I'll let you all know what his advice is.
- I'll be doing this for England soon.....

My OH had one a couple of years ago -First you have to take some stuff to empty your bowel ( Picolax I think its called...........do not leave the house ..it works in minutes ) then he had to have a bland diet for the weekend to keep things ..erm..clear
Then on the Monday morning he had the procedure ..he said it was uncomfortable and more embarressing than anything ( and he is a big girls blouse )

Good luck
